since 1988
Swiss alchemist of sound Balduin, born in Bern 1978, has quietly released a string of albums and EPs since 2001, the contents of which run the gamut from dreamy electronica and lo-fi experimental pop to self-composed harpsichord recitals. Balduin plays all the instruments himself.
Since 2002 he has been making film music, game soundtracks and jingles. His instrumental heavy sample-based electronica debut album named as his home studio CREATIVE COOKERY released 2001 on the well-known german label Crippled Dick Hot Wax, followed by the vibraphonic killerbeat EP CHOOSE CHEESE (2002) and the self-named CD-only album BALDUIN (2004).
In 2009 swiss label Everest Records released a collection of early lo-fi tapes called RAINBOW TAPES (2019) and the 7"-EP MUSICAL IMAGES FOR HARPSICHORD (2012).
Since 2014 Balduin has released his neo-psychedelic music on british labels such as the EP GLAMOUR FOREST (2014), the two well-known LPs ALL IN A DREAM (2014) and BOHEMIAN GARDEN (2017) on Sunstone Records as well as the latest album LOOK AT ME I'M YOU (2020) on Sugarbush Records.
On his Sampler POST FROM MARS, released in May 2014 on the Active Listener Records (NZ), Balduin grabs the ineffable vapours of vintage psychedelia and runs away with it in inspired directions.
He nicely pulls off some more modern, indie-baiting electronic sounds with an impressive listen informed by both the insular bedroom studio as well as the orchestra capacity 1966 studio. The tunes bear a slew of influences ranging from the Electric Prunes, to Donovan, to the Magnetic Fields, but the sound is not mere re-creations as this artist ultimately defines his own psychedelic visions.
SHE'S THE ONE (2021) has well-written songs that are pop-friendly while incorporating contemporary and vintage psychedelic folk and rock music. It's focused on indie and psych-pop songs packed with imaginative instrumentation inspired by the 60s and today. There are moments when the synth feels 80s and other times when it strikes a distinctive warm retro tone.
ACID TAPES (2022), STICKY TAPES (2023) and PLUSH TAPES (2022) is the contination of RAINBOW TAPES, a further collection of lo-fi B-side quality tracks from the past..
MIDISCO (2023) is an instrumental library synth-pop album which could have been used for television or radio broadcasts back in the 80s. Most of the equipment was recorded directly via MIDI on real analogue equipment.
